Fall, Apples, Sadness

Apple-picking season is upon us! It was a quick one for us - we went out to pick the last of the Honeycrisps and a whole bunch of Cortlands last weekend. It was the first weekend for Cortlands so the trees were ripe for the picking and no one was there. Plus we got to eat apple fritters (glorified donut holes) and I was very, very satisfied. The next day, I made and froze 31 apple dumplings to get me through the long, cold months ahead. Apple dumpling = cored, peeled apple filled with cinnamon sugar and butter, wrapped in a buttery pastry crust and basted with cinnamon sugar sauce. Topped with vanilla ice cream of course. Heaven!

The only thing standing in my way of winter apple bliss is the glucose test that I'm pretty sure I failed at the doctor's yesterday. They check the way your body handles sugar between 24-28 weeks to see if you are at risk for gestational diabetes. I blame it on my weird diet that day (ate lunch two hours late) but who am I kidding, I'm doomed to take the three-hour follow-up test. And if I do have gestational diabetes, goodbye dumplings! Oh it is the sadness. They also have to test my blood something like 4 times and I can't eat anything all day. I haven't received the call from the doctor yet confirming this, but my test results online don't lie! Poo.

Other than that, fall has been going pretty smoothly. I don't usually enjoy September because of the harsh shift into work (for E) and morning traffic (for me). Plus it brings back memories of school years that seemed to last forever. At least I still have my energy, and haven't really been bothered by the soccer ball I've been carrying around as of late. This weekend I need to get on researching daycares and pediatricians. And then hopefully next weekend we can go to the Topsfield fair! Petting barnyard animals and eating kettle corn is a highlight of fall.
